Saturday 28th April 2007 10:00 am - 3:00pm 'Migrants and Their Money' Workshop The City Centre Geography Building (19) of Mile End Campus at Queen Mary, University of London on Mile End Road, E1 4NS - map of university

In the morning leading experts will present a compelling picture of how and why migrants send money home, what happens to their money and the impact on their lives here in the UK. The afternoon will be solutions-driven, and will include a visiting American speaker on developments underway in the USA to give migrants greater financial power. A schedule of the day is attached. Considerable time will be given to open discussion since we anticipate having community and faith leaders, academics, trade unionists, industry and NGO representatives who collectively bring a wealth of insight.

The event is co-organised by London Citizens (the largest independent alliance of faith and civil society organisations in the capital) and The City Centre (an academic unit in the Department of Geography at Queen Mary, University of London). Lunch will be provided thanks to generous support from UNISON.

Our aim with this workshop is to lay the ground for more just and effective provision of vital services to migrants. Your contribution would be highly valued and I hope very much you will be able to attend. To confirm a place please reply to Josephine Mukanjira at josephine.mukanjira@cof.org.uk

West London Citizens Listening Campaign Final Project Selection Assembly

Click to download the Assembly Invitation.

Acton Town Hall,
Winchester St, W3 6NE
Acton Town

Acton Central Rail station.

Members will discuss proposals arising from the listening campaign, and then vote through a manageable programme of campaigns for West London Citizens - some very local and some more ambitious. Each member institution would have one vote, be able to propose issues, and would bring ideally ten delegates.

Having agreed an agenda, action teams will be set up for each of the campaigns. For example, these might be on the living wage, affordable housing, or safer streets.

This became a very exciting Celebration of our “Living Wage” to date successes, including the work with Mayor Livingstone and the London Olympic Committee, who have all committed to the £6.70 Living Wage for London Citizens.

10 years of dozens of different, small and some extensive actions and projects and very successful, lasting achievements were described in 10 lively and impressive presentations. They were given by high level speakers and those, who had been personally involved from diverse faith communities and the wide variety of London Citizens member organisations and partner associations in the U.S. The venue at the old Pura Foods Factory had been chosen as the historical location of one of the first successes of Telco East London Citizens by combining the voices of several local communities to induce the management of an unbearably smelly food processing operation to invest some £ 2 m into an environmentally friendly plant. Another link is now, that the developers who recently acquired this site for residential accommodation purposes are the same firm, which London Citizens had successfully induced to leave a car park site in Whitechapel some 8 years ago for an expansion of the East London Mosque. The audience represented the diversity of London 's communities by members from many faith groups, local trade unions, schools, universities and associations of nationals from several countries.
