London Citizens Leadership Meets with Mayor Boris Johnson

Mayor Johnson followed through on his promise to meet with London Citizens Leaders at City Hall on 10th June 2009. During the meeting the Mayor agreed to attend the London Citizens Annual Assembly at the Barbican Centre at 19:00 on 25th November 2009, along with the Lord Mayor and hopefully the Chancellor and Shadow Chancellor.

Mr Johnson also agreed for City Hall to be used as a City Safe Haven and that a sticker would be displayed in the window when London Citizens had recruited 99 other Safe Havens around London.

During the meeting, the Major endorsed the proposal discussed to expand and promote the Living Wage, using the LDA’s purchasing and procurement power to require all companies they deal with to be accredited ‘Living Wage’ employers; the Mayor also agreed to consider adding ‘Living Wage Employer Awards’ to the various Awards Ceremonies now held in City Hall and for this to happen in 2010.

The Mayor noted London Citizens’ continued interest in both piloting and supporting the development of Community Land Trusts in London as a solution to the crisis in affordable family housing. He encouraged London Citizens to approach the Regional Director of the Homes and Communities Agency to register our interest in the St Clements Hospital site in Mile End for the pilot.  London Citizens will be meeting with the new Chair and Chief Executive of the Legacy Company to discuss interest in CLT’s being used to deliver affordable housing on the Olympics site.

The Mayor agreed to write a Forward to a new publication that ‘Strangers into Citizens’ Campaign has prepared with the arguments for an ‘earned amnesty’ and offered to consider the proposal that he or the LDA provide some sort of travel card for ‘section 4’ migrants who have to report regularly in person to various BIA Reporting Centers across London. London Citizens agreed to consider the best way of this being done and provide some guidance to the Mayor over the next few weeks.
